OpenSwitcher: A DIY microcontroller based drive switcher

Published 17.10.2021 - 20:32 by osz

About a month ago, a project in two different versions appeared on GitHub, which should make the hearts of hobbyists beat faster.

OpenSwitcher and OpenSwitcher 1200 are basically one project for different Amiga models. OpenSwitcher 1200 is aimed at owners of an Amiga 600 or Amiga 1200, while OpenSwitcher is aimed at friends of the Amiga 500. But what is this about?

Under the designation Drive Switcher, Drive Selector or Boot Selector there are some, sometimes more, sometimes less complex projects that enable switching between DF0 and DF1 as a floppy drive. OpenSwitcher is supposed to be different and of high quality and promises to be easily soldered together from easily available parts and also easily programmed. The firmware can be transferred to the finished OpenSwitcher directly via USB instead of using a special programmer device. [...]

Almost 6000 MagicWB icons available as PNG

Published 17.10.2021 - 15:29 by osz

The GitHub user tanshoku has made a repository accessible that contains almost 6000 MagicWB icons in PNG format. These were obtained from the following source: https://grimore.org/amiga/standardised_ ... s#download And then converted from the info format common under AmigaOS to the PNG format. What these icons can be used for is up to each individual's creativity. For example, a surface of the preferred operating system that is visually adapted to the AmigaOS 3 with MagicWB extension would be conceivable. And here you can get the icons: https://grimore.org/amiga/standardised_ ... s#download

Amiga 500: 8 MB Fast RAM and IDE connection on the CPU socket

Published 17.10.2021 - 15:21 by osz

Maybe hobbyists still know the two projects ram68k and ide68k. The first project is an 8 MB Fast RAM expansion for the Amiga 500, the second an expansion that provides the Amiga 500 with an IDE port. Both expansions are installed in the CPU socket and then piggyback the CPU on top. Both expansions and CPU can also be combined to form a kind of burger.

Oleg Mishin probably thought that it could be done better and more compactly and with his A500_8MB_ide extension he created a solution that offers an IDE port and 8 MB Fast RAM with autoconfig function in one in the CPU socket of the Amiga 500.

All details and photos of the project are available on GitHub: https://github.com/OlegMishin/A500_8MB_ide

MediaVault version 1.4.1 is out

Published 17.10.2021 - 15:05 by osz

A new version of MediaVault was recently released for AmigaOS 4. If you are new to this application, here is a brief description: MediaVault is a kind of management system for audio and video sources on the Internet. These can be radio stations or podcasts, for example. Now you can search and filtered them in MediaVault. The application focuses solely on discovering and managing the media sources; playback can be redirected to your favorite player and enjoyed via it.

George Sokianos, the developer behind MediaVault, has now created an update with version 1.4.1 of his software. This now comes with a ready-made example script, which is supposed to facilitate the connection of the preferred player. A search was also implemented based on category and / or language, which makes it possible to find the latest podcasts. Furthermore, MediaVault now shows more details (bitrate and codec) about radio stations and is more user-friendly when it comes to retrieving a podcast which leads to an error.

Download and a detailed changelog can be found in the GitHub repository of the project: https://github.com/walkero-gr/mediavaul ... tag/v1.4.1
