Amiwin with bsdsocket.library 4.347 (roadshow 1.14) crashes

Post by my_pc_is_amiga »

I'm having an issue with Amiwin with bsdsocket.library 4.347 (roadshow 1.14). I tried both the generic one and the 68020+ one and having same issue. When loading various tools (fvwm, xcalc), etc. I'm getting the following hits. This seems to only happen when I'm using the amitcp transport and the xtrans.library seems to be interacting with bsdsocket.library. Without MuForce/MuGa active the machine will crash with 8100 0005.

I went back to MiamiDx (that has a bsdsocket.library 4.1), and not seeing any issue -- no crash and no hits and hence suspect something going on with roadshow and amiwin.

While waiting you can add code tags for the Mu* output for a better read.

This is really hard to figure out, I am afraid :(

From what the MuGuardianAngel+MuForce output says, the issue seems to be not directly associated with the Roadshow bsdsocket.library TCP/IP kernel, which does not even show up in the output anywhere. What is ominous is the warning that a memory pool was corrupted, suggesting that whatever happens in xtrans.library ended up trashing memory. This is what is behind the "Misaligned release of 0a80141c, size 0a8015ce performed." line in the output, which happens on the schedule of the "fvwm" program currently running.

As far as I know AmiWin is close to 25 years old by now and no source code to it is available, which is what is making getting to the bottom of the problem so hard. The author of AmiWin is also the author of the "Miami" and "Miami Deluxe" Amiga TCP/IP stacks which may explain why the issue does not appear if you use either of these.

Memory corruption can happen for any number of reasons, and the Amiga having no means to curb or deflect their effects, this is the worst type of bug of its kind. As the MuGuardianAngel+MuForce output shows, there's a detectable problem but no related cause.

Sadly, I think we both have to get lucky to find more information on what exactly could have triggered this problem :(

Hi olsen,

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking back at some other logs I had done and was trying to get more info on the issue by using
"http://aminet.net/package/comm/tcp/networksnooper". Please see attached files:

roadshow_with_amiwin.txt
miamidx_with_amiwin.txt

Not sure if networksnooper will help much -- let me know if it is at all useful.

Also, attaching logfiles of MuGa/MuForce:
amiwin.txt
amiwin2.txt

In amiwin2.txt I do see some bsdsocket.library pointers:

No such luck so far. Both the AmiWin server and the applications which make use of it are black boxes :(
In amiwin2.txt I do see some bsdsocket.library pointers:
----> 093e119c - "Workbench3.2:Libs/bsdsocket.library" Hunk 0 Offset 00000244
----> 08fb24b0 - "Workbench3.2:C/MuGuardianAngel" Hunk 0 Offset 00001f58

----> 088b1dd8 - "KickTag - exec 47.7 (12.11.2020)" Hunk 1 Offset 00001dd8
----> 088b1d80 - "KickTag - exec 47.7 (12.11.2020)" Hunk 1 Offset 00001d80
----> 093ed4f8 - "Workbench3.2:Libs/bsdsocket.library" Hunk 0 Offset 0000c5a0
----> 093ec4ca - "Workbench3.2:Libs/bsdsocket.library" Hunk 0 Offset 0000b572
----> 093e1972 - "Workbench3.2:Libs/bsdsocket.library" Hunk 0 Offset 00000a1a
Indeed, but they do not appear to be significant here, with regard to what triggered the crash. These function addresses show up because of the very deep stack space diagnostic performed by MuForce. Any code which loaded bsdsocket.library or opened it in order to use it can have left these addresses on the stack at a time.

These two belong to the bsdsocket.library initialization code and the first executable code of the library:

----> 093e119c - "Workbench3.2:Libs/bsdsocket.library" Hunk 0 Offset 00000244
----> 093e0f5c - "Workbench3.2:Libs/bsdsocket.library" Hunk 0 Offset 00000004

This is a function which is called when the TCP/IP kernel code is waiting for an operation to commence which requires access to a critical section, sort of like the exec.library/ObtainSignalSemphore() function:

----> 093ed4f8 - "Workbench3.2:Libs/bsdsocket.library" Hunk 0 Offset 0000c5a0

This is part of a loop in a long integer division function:

----> 093ec4ca - "Workbench3.2:Libs/bsdsocket.library" Hunk 0 Offset 0000b572

This is at the very end of the bsdsocket.library close function:

----> 093e1972 - "Workbench3.2:Libs/bsdsocket.library" Hunk 0 Offset 00000a1a

So, sadly, no new insights into what may be going on here. My hunch remains that what happens here is likely the result of memory corruption in the data structures which the Roadshow bsdsocket.library makes use of.

Thanks olsen -- it does sound like this is not easy to figure out without knowing what Amiwin and its tools are doing at the source level...

I have looked at some of the logs a bit more and do see some differences but seems like I have some things different in the configs between the roadshow and Miami TCP/IP stacks based on looking at these logs.

in the roadshow_with_amiwin.txt logs:

a) Here there is some access to gethostbyname() but there is no inputs to it--not sure if the structure is somehow missed being initialized correctly or not or used incorrectly by Amiwin.

time: Saturday, 15:34:36
bsdsocket.library base: $8f6ee9c
function: gethostbyname()
result: $0
input:

b) With roadshow log, amiwin has some access to the loopback address that I don't see in the miami logs.

time: Saturday, 15:34:30
bsdsocket.library base: $8f6ee9c
function: inet_addr()
result: 127.0.0.1/$7f000001
input: 127.0.0.1

I'll have to see how to configure the 2 to be the same I suppose to see if this can change any behavior.

Hi olsen,

Some good news. I have figured out that MiamiDX is creating a bunch of ENV: variables at runtime and identified HOSTNAME as one that Amiwin uses. If not there, that crash happens. If I have a HOSTNAME variable in ENVARC: then all is okay.

Roadshow doesn't create this automatically Looks like there is some strange handling of Amiwin that doesn't work if HOSTNAME is not present. Did AmiTCP create HOSTNAME as well? There is some mention of it here and seems it has some legacy to UNIX:

https://wiki.preterhuman.net/AmiTCP/IP_ ... _Questions:

"8.8: AmigaELM uses the HOSTNAME but AmiTCP seems to want the fully
qualified domain name. How can I resolve this problem? (Thanks to Jarno
and Michael)

You could probably set the variable to "name only", since AmiTCP/IP itself
does not use the variable at all. Some application programs (such as
e-mail) might have problems, though. The current standard on the various
Unix versions is that the HOSTNAME is the fully qualified host name (with
the domain).

AmiTCP 3.0 and 4.0 fix this by implementing the gethostname() function
differently (the name is taken from the name server/host database instead
of the HOSTNAME variable if possible). "
